Roast Your Own Coffee With A Popcorn Popper. In 5 simple steps.

March 21st, 2008 | Category: Food and Drink

If you can, the first time you do this - do it outside.
Step 1 - We weighed out ~80 grams of fresh premium coffee beans. In this case it was from Green Bean Coffee.

Step 2 - We warmed up the popcorn popper for around 30 seconds and then dumped the beans in. The machine rotates the beans around and blasts them with high temperatures accordingly. The trick is to fill the machine up to a level so that the beans are just barely moving.

Step 3 - After around a minute, the beans start cracking. It sounds similar to popcorn yet it takes a higher temperature to do it. Let it ride for a few more minutes. You will notice that husks start drifting out of the machine. This is a good sign. Keep an eye on it and once you notice the beans are dark and the cracking has subsided - you know you’re done! Pour them out into a sieve. Be careful. They are really hot.

Step 4 - Juggle the beans between two sieves to get the cool air through them. They cool down in a few minutes. The smell is really, really, really good.

Step 5 - Thats it. Once they are room temperature, throw them in an airtight container for ~3 days to let the beans de-gas. Once that is done, enjoy. Yum.
