We Installed A DIY Grey Water System Today

November 17th, 2007 | Category: About Me

My house mate picked up a pump from Aldi last week on the cheap, we bought some hoses and have hooked up a crude, yet effective, water saving device. Check it out.

Water Bin

In the above picture we have filled our recycling bin with water dispensed from the washing machine. Instead of the washing machine outlet pointing down the drain we added some extra hose, threaded it out the window and placed the end of it in the bin to capture the water. We use biodegradable washing detergent.

Water Pump

This picture is of the pump bought from Aldi which sucks the water out of the bin and channels it to the nozzle you can see me holding in the picture. With the pressure generated by the pump, it is more than enough to have a steady and strong stream to water the garden.

Garden

The garden in the backyard with tomato seedlings.

Front Bin

And out the front we have a plastic container that catches the down pipe runoff. Attached to the bottom of the container is a fitting to which we have attached a garden hose with a trigger nozzle. Now all we need is the rain.

How do you save water? Do you place a bucket in the shower or do you save water other ways?
