Is Facebook Dropping The “IS” In Status Updates?
Yesterday afternoon on the train home, I got this tweet mentioning that Facebook has dropped the “IS” from their status update box. I was amazed. I knew that there were 500+ groups on Facebook that are campaigning for the IS to be dropped, however, I really didn’t think Facebook overlords would cave in. According to Allfacebook.com and Wired it seems that they have - effective immediately, even though I cannot see any changes on the profiles page yet.
Simon Goudie who uses Twitter actually managed to update his status “IS” free, as pictured above. Whether it was a beta test operating at the time or a bug that allowed Simon to update his status is undetermined, yet he managed to do it. Alas, almost two hours later, it appeared that Facebook had changed its mind and was putting the “IS” back in.
The buzz throughout Twitter is mostly favourable. Tweets are coming though in support of it such as Apurva, Mcnutty, craigchilds, and shade_chr.
Dropping the “IS” from Facebook status will allow users a new angle on telling the world what they are up to. Updating it such as “Andrew feels good” or “Andrew loves the rain” adds a more personal and emotive touch to the updates, don’t you think?
Do you update your status often? Are you able to update it without the “IS”? Do you think this is a good move on Facebook’s behalf?
