Sydney’s Hailstorm on December 9th, 2007
Even though I have been living in Melbourne for a few years now, I still remember how nasty the hail storms can get in Sydney. Here’s a short YouTube video of someone who got stuck in the middle of it. They’ve pulled over to the side of the road seeking shelter. Check it out.

Large Storm Hits Melbourne - 03/12/07
Earlier this afternoon, a turbulent storm front swept across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Large downpours caused widespread flash flooding with over 100 calls to the SES. There were two thunderstorms fronts today that hit Blackburn, where I am located for work.
I first noticed the storm front approaching on the BOM radar. As the first one approached I noted that all of a sudden the rain had hit hard. Sheet and fork lightning danced in the sky quite close followed, by the loud claps of thunder that accompanies them in their atmospheric interlude.
At this point the rain was so heavy that it was splashing up the footpath under the front door and onto the tiles. Towels were hastily arranged to counteract the problem and the memories of previous storms put us into action checking the known trouble spots for leaks. To our relief, no leaks were found.
Once the storm had passed to or amazement though the glass front doors we could see blue skies and sunshine. It was still quite humid and the air conditioning unit was, thankfully, working fairly well. This was short lived, for angry looking grey metallic like clouds soon rolled overhead and the heavens opened up. I suppose when people use the word torrential, it is used in the sense of something you would only see once every few years. If that is the case, then this was a torrential downpour. The only thing I can compare it to is the warm tropical downpours that occur during the warmer months in far north Queensland. It really seemed like one of those.
Anyway, as the second front unleashed upon us, one of my colleagues, Rod loudly exclaimed that water was leaking from the roof, next to the air con unit. A bucket was quickly put under it. Then it started gushing from the roof above Andrea’s desk. A constant steady stream landing on a nearby desk and splashing onto computers and other electronic items called for swift action.
The nearest bin immediately turned into bucket to collect the water. As soon as that was under control, a massive leak erupted from the roof right above the electrical power box. It took two large plastic garbage bins to get that one contained. It was then highlighted to the entire office by Rod’s profuse swearing that the kitchen was flooded.
Water was pissing out of the cupboard and when the door was opened a mini tsunami flushed forth. Pipes located under the stairs didn’t handle the downpour from the roof and had choked and vomited the water into the cupboard and kitchen. Power went off and on with circuits tripping and other businesses nearby also had problems.
Once the storm had passed it was agreed by all in the event of an overnight storm, to keep the buckets underneath the leaks that had appeared and to put some towels out to protect the carpet leading into the kitchen. Overall, an exciting event. SniktaWP’s has posted to Flickr the tree in his front yard he found upon arriving home from work today.
Where were you when the storm hit. Did it have an impact on you? Get any photos? Post a comment.
